Getting Started: How to Play Infinite Horizons

System Basics and Core Concepts

Welcome to Infinite Horizons

This overview provides a quick glimpse into the core concepts of our flexible and intuitive roleplaying system, designed to empower you to tell any story across an endless array of genres.

The Heart of the System: How It Works

At its core, Infinite Horizons uses a dice pool system to resolve actions and challenges. When your character attempts something risky or uncertain, you'll determine a pool of ten-sided dice (d10s).

Building Your Dice Pool

Your dice pool is determined by combining a base of 1 die with a relevant Trait score and a relevant Skill score.

1 (base die) + Trait + Skill = Your Dice Pool

Example: If you're attempting a nimble feat, you might combine your Finesse Trait with your Acrobatics Skill.

Achieving Successes

You roll your dice pool, and any die that rolls a 7 or higher counts as a Success.

Exploding Dice: Roll a 10? That's a Success, and you get to roll that die again, potentially gaining even more successes! This allows for moments of incredible heroism and luck.

Resolving Actions: Your Game Master (GM) will tell you how many successes are needed for a task. If you achieve enough, your character succeeds!

Creating Your Hero: Character Basics

Building a character in Infinite Horizons is a straightforward process focused on defining your hero's innate talents and learned abilities.

Traits: Who You Are

Your character has six core Traits that represent their fundamental aptitudes. You'll allocate a limited number of points to these Traits, starting from zero, to define your character's natural strengths.

Body

Physical strength and endurance

Finesse

Agility and precision

Wits

Intelligence and problem-solving

Awareness

Perception and intuition

Presence

Charisma and influence

Resolve

Willpower and mental fortitude

Skills: What You Can Do

Your character possesses a wide array of Skills, representing their learned knowledge and practiced abilities. You'll distribute a set number of points among these skills, allowing you to specialize in the areas most important to your character's concept.

Skills include abilities like: Acrobatics, Melee, Diplomacy, Tech, Arcana, and many more. The system provides a comprehensive list, but they can be customized to fit your setting!

Combat and Wounds

Combat in Infinite Horizons is dynamic and narrative, with all actions happening simultaneously.

Opposed Rolls

In combat, you and your opponent will make opposed dice rolls. Your net successes (your successes minus your opponent's) determine the outcome.

Example: You roll 4 successes on your attack, opponent rolls 2 successes defending. You have 2 net successes (4 - 2 = 2), meaning your attack has significant impact.

Wound Track

Damage is tracked using a visual Wound Track with Minor, Major, and Critical tiers. Net successes from an attack inflict damage, filling boxes on this track.

Resilience

Your character's Body and Resolve Traits directly influence their capacity to absorb Minor wounds. High Body can even passively mitigate incoming damage.

Wound Progression

When a tier fills up, further damage spills over into the next, more severe tier, leading to increasing penalties as your character becomes more wounded.
